Pomegranate is a deciduous fruit bearing tree native to the 
Mediterranean Middle East, now cultivated in many subtropical 
regions of the world and dating back several thousand years. 
The pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) is mentioned prominently in 
the bible.  Its brilliant red seed pulp when pressed, releases a 
juice that is treasured for both its delicious taste and rich 
content of antioxidant phenolics.  

UCLA in 2006 lead Allan 
Pantuck, MD, associate professor of urology suggested that 
consuming 8 ounces of pomegranate juice on a daily basis may 
slow the progression of prostate cancer.  While pomegranate is 
not considered a cure, Pantuck remarked, “There are a lot of 
reasons to recommend it and not a lot of reasons to avoid 
it.”

Books recently published on pomegranate suggest that the 
fruit is good for everything from high cholesterol and diabetes 
to prostate and breast cancer.   This is due to the powerful 
phytochemicals found in pomegranate particularly the antioxidant 
phenolic group punicalagins discovered in the aril pulp.   These 
antioxidants are the subject of 35 medical research studies 
conducted since 1990.
