Clinical studies on postmenopausal women have shown that ipriflavone, an isoflavone, helps maintain bone mineral density when combined with calcium.

Ostivone is a branded form of ipriflavone commonly sold OTC in health food stores. Ostivone promotes healthy bone formation. In research experiments, the ipriflavone found in ostivone has been shown to spare oxygen and reduce lactic acid in heart muscle tissue. It seemed to work better the lower the oxygen levels were in the heart muscle. Further research is needed to confirm these findings and its effects in human studies.
